Most life science companies don't have a sales problem or a marketing problem; they may have an alignment and/or resource problem. If so, the type of challenges below tend to surface it.
Many consultants own one lane.
Performance Business Consulting owns a system.
A clear differentiator between Performance Business Consulting and other advisors in the IVD and life sciences market is the ability to diagnose and rebuild the entire commercial system, because the founder has operated inside every one of those functions across 30+ years of senior commercial leadership.
That means the assessment is not borrowed from a methodology deck. It comes from experience.
"The gap between scientific innovation and commercial execution is rarely a strategy problem. More often, it's a structure, alignment, and accountability problem."
Performance Business Consulting operates on a fixed-fee, time-boxed model. Every engagement has a defined objective, a defined deliverable, and a defined end. We do not embed, expand scope, or become a dependency. We help build a sustainable and cohesive system to leave you with something that works.
An 8–12 week structured diagnostic and rebuild. Sales, marketing, operations, and planning assessed and realigned before you scale or hire senior leadership into an undefined system.
A defined-scope project targeting a specific dysfunction: channel structure, market entry, CRM discipline, S&OP integration, campaign execution, or a commercial performance reset. Defined deliverable, defined timeline.
Executive-level commercial oversight on a retained basis. KPI governance, leadership alignment, and ongoing strategic discipline. Maximum two active engagements at any time.
A structured assessment of the marketing function as it exists today: people, structure, process, budget allocation, and alignment with commercial objectives. Delivers a formal report with evidence-based findings and a clear development direction for building a marketing function that is sustainable, can grow with the business, and drives revenue rather than activity.
Not every challenge requires a full reset. Some organizations need focused, expert intervention on a specific commercial problem, executed cleanly and handed back. Project mandates are scoped individually and may include:
Scope and fee determined by mandate. All engagements are fixed-fee and time-boxed regardless of size.
How this is different from a consulting firm
Performance Business Consulting is not a firm. It is a single senior practitioner who has spent three decades inside the systems you may be looking to build.
That means the client and engagement get the founder's full attention. Not a junior analyst who escalates issues to a higher pay grade.
30+ years building and leading commercial systems inside Thermo Fisher Scientific. One of the world’s most respected organizations in diagnostics and life sciences.
Brian Kemp is not a consultant who has observed these problems from the outside. He has created the roles, written the job descriptions, built the departments, hired and coached the teams, driven the alignment, and delivered results, for every commercial function he has ever held. Over three decades at one of the world’s leading diagnostics and life science organizations, he led marketing functions for a $250M Americas region, managed teams of up to 14 people, and built the channel infrastructure, CRM discipline, S&OP integration, commercial alignment, technical training, and competitive positioning that sustained commercial scale across North America, Europe, and Emerging Markets. That work was done inside a complex global matrix, operating across multiple time zones, aligning cross-functional teams spanning R&D, regulatory affairs, operations, and QA/QC, while maintaining cross-divisional relationships across a large, multi-business organization. He has navigated that environment without direct reporting authority over the people he needed to move, and delivered results regardless.
What separates this practice from a generalist commercial advisor is a depth of scientific fluency that is rarely found on the commercial side of a life science organization. Brian’s foundation is in microbiology and medical laboratory science, with hands-on expertise across culture media, routine and molecular diagnostics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) frameworks. That technical grounding and deep understanding of customer processes and needs shaped every role he has held: from coaching field teams on product positioning and clinical messaging, to designing campaigns that bridge the gap between science and sales, to developing a global AST initiative focused on One Health , bridging clinical and industrial applications of AMR surveillance across interconnected human, animal, and environmental health systems. In 2022, Brian was an invited speaker at the 40th Turkish Microbiology Congress, presenting “Methods to Control AMR Development in a Post-COVID World”, a recognition of scientific standing within a peer clinical and academic audience.
That combination, scientific credibility and commercial execution, is where the real work happens in life science organizations, and where dysfunction can live too. A demanding test of both came in leading the marketing function integration following the acquisition of TREK Diagnostic Systems’ AST and Blood Culture business from Magellan Biosciences, absorbed into an existing microbiology portfolio. That meant identifying product synergies and channel conflicts, restructuring teams, aligning the newly combined sales and marketing teams, and training the broader commercial organization on the value and synergies of an expanded product range, while maintaining commercial momentum through the disruption. Brian has also led distributor networks, managed clinical trials, interfaced directly with customers and key opinion leaders, and driven lead generation through non-sales technical engagement. He applies a disciplined, evidence-based problem-solving methodology grounded in the scientific method to commercial and operational challenges in regulated environments, driving efficiency and accountability without imposing frameworks that don’t fit the reality of the organization. He has commercialized Health Canada Class 3 medical devices and operates with working knowledge of FDA and EU IVDR regulatory frameworks. The result is an advisor who can sit across from your scientific leadership in the morning and your commercial team in the afternoon, and be taken seriously in both rooms.
If any of those challenges sound familiar, let’s have a conversation.
